1. What is the source of wine information in The Uncorked Cellar.
A. The vast majority of the information comes from the various winemakers or wineries (and we thank them for their support).

........a) How often are updates available?
........A. We provide two updates per year (January and July)

........b). Do I have to purchase or upgrade The Uncorked Cellar every year?
........A. You do not have to upgrade The Uncorked Cellar every year - although many of our customers choose to do so. The only limitations if you are not subscribed for the current calender year are that you cannot save your cellar as a Web Cellar, access Global Wine Stocks merchant pricing or of course have the latest wine information updates.

........c) How much do updates cost?
........A. You can view the current re-subscription costs for registered customers at www.uncork.biz/order_update.htm

2. Is The Uncorked Cellar free?
A.The Uncorked Cellar is free to evaluate for up to 14 days. After this, you must register if you wish to continue to use it. We offer a no-risk 30 day money back complete satisfaction guarantee. If you are not completely satisfied, let us know within 30 days and we will refund your purchase in full. See our refund policy here

3. How do I install The Uncorked Cellar on my computer ?
A. To install the program on Windows ......

  • Download to a temporary directory
  • Start Windows Explorer.
  • Switch to the Temporary directory.
  • Run the file you downloaded to extract the compressed files
  • Run the installation program SETUP.EXE
  • You can then delete all files in the temporary directory

SETUP will create a directory, copy the files, create a Program Group and run The Uncorked Cellar.

4. Will the information I enter during the evaluation period be retained when I register to a full version?
A. Yes. All data entered to cellars other than the Sample Cellar is retained for all updates.

5. Do you sell wine?
A. No, just great software. Please also note that "values" in The Uncorked Cellar are value guides, not prices, and are based on the value supplied to us for the most recent vintage of each wine

6. If at the end of the evaluation period I do not wish to register, how do I remove it from my computer?
A. If you wish to remove The Uncorked Cellar software from your computer

  • Open Add/Remove programs (see SETTINGS, CONTROL PANEL on your computer's taskbar)
    Select The Uncorked Cellar
    Press Add/Remove

This will remove all programs and reference data files used for The Uncorked Cellar, but will leave any cellar files you have created. These may be removed manually by using Windows Explorer to remove the sub directories created with your cellar data.

7. How can I see the total number of wines in the cellar?
A. When you press "clear all", look at the status line at the bottom of the window.. It will say xx of yy wines displayed. You can also use the menu command "Cellar, Cellar Summary"

8. Can I find out how many reds, whites etc or per country or region?
A. Just click on red, & the status line will say how many reds are in your cellar,
...or (partially) fill out NZ as the region, and it will show how many NZ wines you have etc

9. The graphs enable me to see in graphical terms when each wine matures but can I sort the database to list those wines per year and how many maturing each year?
A. Yes. Double click on the heading, or use the menu sort under Tools, Sort....

10. Previously I was using excel for my cellar and I could sort the data in many ways. Do I have this functionality with your software?
A. Yes. You can sort your cellar by any of the viewed columns in your database by double clicking on that field and/or column similar to Excel.

11. Can I search for a wine in my cellar using queries such as "a red wine from Aust maturing this year"?
A. I use the search or sort functions as noted above. Try entering AUS in the region, RED as the type of wine and this (or some other) year in the PEAK field.

12. What are the different operating modes?
A.

  • Cellar mode provides full cellar management - but without the "add wine" page.
  • Wine Guide mode is only the wine guide and is for people who do not have a cellar - and just want to use us as an information source.
  • Full mode provides both cellar management and the wine guide..

13. I can only see 500 wines - where are the rest?
A. For the sake of speed and ease of selection, we limit the display to the first 500 matching wines
Enter the first few letters of the winery you want and wines from that winery will be displayed. If you want to see all wines from the selected country, right-click in the lower half of the screen and select "Display all wines"

17. Is a Mac version available?
A. In order to focus on the quality of our software, data and customer service, The Uncorked Cellar is released as a Windows application only.
If you install a windows emulator or Virtual Machine such as Virtual PC, VMWare Fusion, Parallels Desktop, Play On Mac (free, and does not require Windows), or VirtualBox (also free) , you can run it on a Mac. We don't have Mac's so we can't provide support for apple or emulator specific issues, but our users have told us that it works fine.

If you save your cellar as a web cellar, you can view it on any computer via your web browser

Links to Emulators or Virtual Machines

Parallels Desktop  www.parallels.com/au/products/desktop
Play on Mac www.playonmac.com
Virtual Box www.virtualbox.org
Virtual PC www.microsoft.com/australia/office/mac/virtualpc7

  • Apple support running windows applications with their Mac OSX Leopard or later. Boot Camp comes with every new Mac, and it lets you run Windows natively as if your Mac were a PC. If you want to run OS X and Windows side by side, you can purchase Parallels Desktop or VMware Fusion.

Notes on specific emulators or Virtual Machines

  • Parallels Desktop
    • RECOMMENDED: We found this installed quite easily - installation of Windows into the virtual machine worked without any issues and and all windows programs we tried ran just as fast as they do on a PC - including The Uncorked Cellar.
  • Play-On-Mac
    • Just to let you know that it (The Uncorked Cellar) runs seamlessly on the latest version of Play On Mac. Matthew Day (Australia)
    • We found runs, but is quite slow
  • VMWare Fusion
    • It works just fine except that I can't get Uncorked reports to print; the printer starts then stops. My workaround was to install a pdf printer driver in Windows, print the pdf version in Windows and then move the pdf file to my Mac desktop, then print the Mac pdf file; that method works fine. I also have no problem creating a csv file, moving it to my Mac desktop and opening it in Excel. (Dave)
  • VNC
    • VNC really is a nice way to access a dedicated cellar PC remotely and for mainly Mac households it's an inexpensive entry point. As I mentioned a dedicated netbook - especially one that's really stripped down like mine is has more than enough power. Knowing it was going to have a dedicated task, I pulled out as many services, DLLs, ... as possible to keep the windows overhead low. All I have on the device is Uncorked, Firefox, UltraVNC, a free anti-virus (the only thing that slows up the netbook) and iTunes (in case I need some music in the cellar). See picture of my cellar here.. Mark Fabbi (Ontario, Canada)

17 (a)..... Is an iPhone or iPad version available?
A. In order to focus on the quality of our software, data and customer service, The Uncorked Cellar is released as a Windows application only.
You can download the RDP remote desktop app from the App store (free) and set it up to remotely run your windows desktop residing on a desktop or laptop PC.

If you save your cellar as a web cellar, you can log on at www.iUncork.com with uyour mobile device such as an iPad, iPhone or Android device. This allows you to manage your web cellar completely from your iPad - or any mobile device. See www.uncork.biz/showme-mobile.htm for some screenshots of this on an iPhone.

18. Is The Uncorked Cellar compatible with Windows Vista, Windows 7 and Windows 8?
A. Yes

  • The 2013 version or later is fully compatible with Windows 8.
  • The 2009 version or later is fully compatible with Windows 7.
  • Especially if you are upgrading from Windows XP, you should backup your cellar to a CSV file before upgrading to a later Windows version, then restore that cellar after you have completed the upgrade and re-installed The Uncorked Cellar.
  • See the Help under "what's new" for details of the default folder location for cellars.

20. Can I use a Dymo label printer?
A. We do not provide specific support for Dymo label printers at this time. In general, we find that labels produced by these types of printers are too easily damaged thus canceling the benefit of being able to print one label at a time. The printable labels and tags we provide (see http://www.uncork.biz/order_tag.htm) can be printed using any standard printer.

21. How do I solve internet connection problems? .... Click here for answer

22. How do I recharge my Bluetooth Wireless Barcode Scanner?
A. If your scanner is a model BT-4500 (the model number is located near the trigger)

  1. Plug the USB power cable into the DC Jack at the base of the scanner.
  2. Wait until the LED indicator on top of the scanner flashes red.
  3. Press and hold the trigger until the LED indicator flashes green.
    • Charging is in progress while the LED flashes green
    • A full recharge takes about four hours
    • Charging is complete when the LED turns steady green
  4. . View a video here showing all of the steps to recharge the Bluetooth Wireless Bar Code Scanner model BT-4500

If your scanner is a model BT-3805-U or BT-4505-U (the model number is located near the trigger)
  1. Plug the USB power cable into the DC Jack at the base of the scanner.
  2. Wait until the LED indicator on top of the scanner flashes green.
    • Charging is in progress while the LED flashes green
    • A full recharge takes about four hours
    • Charging is complete when the LED turns steady green

23. How do I check if my Bluetooth Wireless Barcode Scanner is operating correctly
A.The easiest way to check that your scanner reads any barcode is to open up Word (or an email) and click where you would normally start typing.

Then, scan a barcode and you should see a series of numbers displayed.

Basic things to check if you do not see any numbers

  1. Your scanner is fully charged (see above)
  2. Your bluetooth adapter is plugged in. It's LED should flash until you turn your scanner on, then change to steady ON.
  3. Your scanner is on (Press and hold the trigger for about 5 seconds - until you hear a series of ascending beeps. The LED on top will initially start flashing, then change to steady when it communicates with the bluetooth adapter. Similarly, the LED on the bluetooth adapter will flash until you turn the scanner on, then it will stay on steady.)
  4. When you scan a barcode, the scanner should give TWO beeps.
If it gives a series of beeps more than two beeps, this means it is in batch mode and is storing the number rather than transmitting to the PC
  5. Try scanning a barcode on several different items with barcode OTHER than the tag - just in case the problem is with the particular barcode you are scanning.
If you still get no response please contact support@uncork.biz

24. I really need to be able to manage my cellar from two or three computers (Cellar notebook, home office, work office) when you buy a full version of the software...how many computers may you load it on?
A. For non commercial use, we license the software to you not your computer - so provided it is you operating the software for wines in your home cellar, only one license is required

26. What is the best way to migrate to a new computer?
A. Download and install the normal version of software from www.uncork.biz/download.htm.
If you have already installed the latest version, make sure you have the latest build by using the menu command 'Help, Check web for updated version'.
To migrate your cellar, please see the help under "How do I... Copy my cellar to a new PC... "

27. What Wine Critic Ratings are included in the Consensus Graphs?
A. The Consensus Graph available for Global Wine Stocks subscribers includes collated ratings from the following wine critics

  • Bettane et Desseauve
  • Burghound
  • Decanter
  • For The Love of Port (Roy Hersh)
  • Gambero Rosso
  • Hachette Vins
  • James Halliday
  • Jancis Robinson
  • Jean-Marc Quarin
  • Jeremy Oliver
  • La Revue du Vin de France
  • Stephen Tanzer (IWC)
  • Wine Advocate (Robert Parker)
  • Wine and spirits magazine
  • Wine Enthusiast
  • Wine Spectator

28. I have just updated and can only see about 10 wines listed per country - all obviously wrong
A. Some versions of Windows lock data files and prevent the installation program from updating them. If this occurs on your system you should

  • Backup your cellar
  • Make a note of where your cellar is stored (See the menu command "Help, Contents, The Uncorked Cellar, Default Folders")
  • Make a note of your registration details (See the menu command "Register")
  • Uninstall the program,
  • Download then re-install to a folder NOT under the Program Files folder
  • You will need to re-enter your registration details, and browse to find your existing cellar

29. Does the web cellar get updated when I make changes to the originating cellar?
A. Any changes you make to your WEB cellar on your pc (ie: a cellar name starting with "www.") will be reflected on the cellar you access via your iPad. However, any cellar you have stored LOCALLY (ie: no "www. in the cellar name) is a completely different cellar - as would different word documents with different names.

30. I am having difficulty logging in with my iPad or iPhone from the link on the Uncork website
A. Try logging in directly at www.iUncork.com by browsing directly via safari on your iPhone or iPad. Note that you must have The Uncorked Cellar window application closed - it logs in on your behalf so it can read and save your web cellar.
