Bar coded wine tags
10/25/07 at 02:08:27
From Gerad

Q: Can a cordless scanner be used for bulk input of the wine cellar and are the barcode tags printed on a perforated 8.6x11 sheet of heavy paper or pre-printed?

A: Cordless scanners for bulk input of your wines are not really appropriate.

The main problem with a remote scanner is that you are unable to enter a wine vintage remotely (most barcodes on the wine bottle do not define the vintage) or view what is happening on the PC screen - just in case that particular barcode is not recognized or something.

A better solution (if you have one) is to use a laptop - at least for the initial data entry.

The pre-printed barcode tags are printed on a strip and are removed one at a time.
The printable tags are on a perforated A4 sheet so they can be printed with any printer.

Neither tag is made from paper - even heavy paper would not be sufficiently durable.
The pre-printed tags are made from Tyvec, while the printable tags are made from Teslin.
Both tags clip firmly around the neck of the bottle so they will not fall off.
